In June 2010, during an interview with Rap-Up, Danja commented that he was working with Spears in the pre-production of Femme Fatale. Darkchild, who was also reportedly working with her, said during a Ustream session in August 2010, "Britney fans are gonna be so happy in a few weeks", hinting about the release of new music. However, this was denied by Spears's manager Adam Leber, who stated, "No new music news right now....Wish people wouldn't mislead you guys with BS info. Not cool! PS- The guys that ARE working on Brit's next album ARE NOT talking about it..." Leber later spoke with Entertainment Weekly, calling the sound of the record "progressive" and "a departure from what you've heard." In November 2010, Dr. Luke announced that he would be the executive producer of Femme Fatale, along with Max Martin. Spears said through her Twitter account on November 12, 2010, that she had recorded "a monster" with Luke and Martin.
On December 2, 2010, the day of her 29th birthday, Spears thanked her fans for the birthday wishes and announced, "I'm almost done with my new album and it will be coming out this March. I AM IN L-O-V-E WITH IT!" In an interview with MTV News on January 14, 2011, Danja commented that Spears was still in the process of recording the album, but he had not yet worked in the studio with her. He also stated that the direction of the record was still unknown, but during a meeting in 2010 "they wanted it to sound urban, hard-hitting, not so much dance, but just that similar sound." On February 2, 2011, Luke spoke to Rolling Stone about the direction of the album, commenting that the final tracklist had not been chosen. Following the announcement of the album's title and cover on February 2, 2011, Spears said about Femme Fatale,
"I've poured my heart and soul into this album over the last 2 years. I've put everything I have into it. This album is for you, my fans, who have always supported me and have stuck by me every step of the way! I love you all! Sexy and Strong. Dangerous yet mysterious. Cool yet confident! FEMME FATALE."
On February 8, 2011, Spears confirmed that she was in the studio with will.i.am through her Twitter account, adding, "you guys are gonna love this one". When asked about the song, Will said, "it's a monster. It's mean and pretty... It's edgy... It's like next level. And she's singing like fresh over it. It's something that today needs." William Orbit confirmed he had co-written a track for Spears with Klas Ahlund, but it was left off the final track listing. During a Twitter chat with her followers on February 10, 2011, Spears described Femme Fataleas "as moody, edgy pop with A LOT of energy" with "a few mid-tempos that could be considered ballads", and added that she had co-written several songs. She neither confirmed or denied the possibility of duets in the album, and also about Martin and Luke, "They make such incredible music. I'm so excited and I can't wait for you guys to hear it. I think its some of the best work I have ever done!" Kesha confirmed she had co-written a song in the album titled "Till The World Ends", which she commented was about "me imagining her and any female musician touring the world [..] You know, when you got out, and you're having an amazing, magical night and you don't want to go to sleep and you want it to last until the world ends."
