Artist Of The Month: Lana Del Rey, Rihanna & Ke$ha

November/ December is like Christmas of the music month. So we decided to have three different Artist Of The Month in this four week period before we start our Flares Of 2012 yearly chart.

Paradise is the third extended play (EP) by American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey, following Kill Kill (2008) and Lana Del Rey (2011). Slated to be released on November 12, 2012, through Universal Music, it was produced by Rick Nowels, Justin Parker, and Rick Rubin. The nine tracks will be available in digital download format, audio CD, and vinyl, as a standalone EP and as part of a two-disc box set for a reissuing of Del Rey's sophomoric album Born to Die.The EP's lead single is "Ride", a downtempo pop ballad produced by Rick Rubin and co-written by "Video Games" author Justin Parker. The video for "Ride" premiered at a promotional event in Santa Monica on October 10, airing online two days later. Critics condemned the video for containing Antifeminism themes and prostitution advocacy. Watch: "Ride"

Unapologetic is the upcoming seventh studio album by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna. It is currently scheduled to be released on November 16, 2012 by Def Jam Recordings. The album's lead single "Diamonds" made its premiere on iHeartRadio on September 26. On July 13, 2012, Sean Garrett confirmed that he had been in the studio with French DJ David Guetta working on Rihanna's album saying "I was in the studio with David doing some stuff for Rihanna recently. He finds inspiration in the things I don't like, and I get excited by the things he doesn't like. He wants to be more urban and I want to be more international, so we push each other, I try to help Rihanna. She works hard and it's cool to write for someone who is so open-minded." On August 21st, American songwriter Claude Kelly revealed that he had been writing songs for Rihanna whilst she was performing in London. Kelly spoke on the songs that he had wrote for Rihanna saying; "Rihanna's a worldwide superstar at this point and she's performing in stadiums and arenas now, so I wanted songs that reflected her audience, when I was in London she was performing at a festival in front of like 30,000 to 40,000 people. So I didn't want small songs that only worked on radio, so I tried to do anthemic big stadium-themed songs." Listen: "Diamonds"

Warrior is the upcoming second studio album by American recording artist Kesha. It is scheduled to be released on November 30, 2012 by RCA Records as the follow-up to her commercially successful 2010 album Animal and EP Cannibal.[1] Writing of the album began in 2011 while the singer was on tour and continued into 2012, whilst she began recording the album in the first quarter of 2012. Inspiration for the songwriting came after the closing of Kesha's worldwide spiritual journey. Thematically, the recording artist intends for the album to be raw, vulnerable, and more personal that her previous albums, Animal and Cannibal. Overall, she said the theme of the record is "magic". Produced in the genres of dance-pop, electropop, and electronic rock, the album features songwriting from fun. and The Flaming Lips. Iggy Pop provides guest vocals for "Dirty Love", which was produced primarily by Dr. Luke. The album's lead single, "Die Young", was released in the United States on September 25 2012. Listen: "Die Young"

Flares of 2011: Female of The Year

  5. Britney Spears
Releasing Femme Fatale in March, Britney start the year with a bang as the album managed to peak the chart and selling 276,000 copies in the first week. It shows how she still managed to still stay on top even though having a decade career.

4. Rihanna
Many would say that That That Talk was such a rush-release after only a year from her comeback album, Loud. But how could you hold off an album like this that consists of hits such as We Found Love that managed to stay on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for 8 consecutive weeks, the longest for the year and also the longest in the whole Rihanna career. Nothing can stop this chick!!

3. Katy Perry
Katy is the only one in this chart that did not release an album this year. This is because her Grammy-nominated album that was release last year still manage to release no. 1 hits for her with a total of five making her the first female to do so from a single album. The question is can the third album beat the 'sensationalness' of Teenage Dream or would it backfires.

2. Lady Gaga
First, the first single, Born This Way became the fastest-selling single in iTunes history. Then, the album sold 1 million copies in the first week. The power of the Little Monsters couldn't be stop. Releasing a total of five singles in this year alone with five videos accompanied it, finishing her last tour and going around the world to promote her Born This Way culture, she had one of her busiest year yet. But she's not done yet, as the official Born This Way tour haven't even started yet!!!!

1. Adele
Other than her vocal cords injuries, Adele had her biggest year yet. Only releasing three singles this year and two of them already a No. 1 hit while her third single, Set Fire To The Rain is quickly climbing the chart, she managed to be called not only Female of the Year but also Artist of The Year. And her six Grammy nominations for her second studio album, 21 clearly shows how deserving she is. She is currently taking a break before releasing her third album. I'm sure everybody would be anticipating for that album.

Flares: Rihanna - Talk That Talk

Despite sounding rushed to capitalize on fourth quarter sales, 2010’s Loud proved that Rihanna’s reign indeed would not let up. The album’s first three singles topped the Hot 100. A fourth one merely went Top Ten. Just as Loud was losing its grip, during the fourth quarter of 2011, Rihanna fired again with another number one single, “We Found Love” -- its success more likely due to the singer’s ecstatic vocal than Calvin Harris' shrill, plinky production. While Talk That Talk is built like another singles-chart-devouring machine, it’s both more rounded and less random than Loud. “We Found Love” and “Where Have You Been” -- the latter with a quote from Geoff Mack's “I’ve Been Everywhere” and echoes of the chorus from Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” -- function as place-holding dance tracks, and there are a couple empty anthems and ballads in the drippy “We All Want Love” and the bombastic “Farewell.” It’s the darker and dirty-minded material that tends to be most effective -- where Rihanna is more alive and believable, where her collaborators provide the most adventurous productions. In the Bangladesh-produced “Cockiness (Love It),” one of the most hypnotic and wicked beats of the last decade, Rihanna absolutely relishes the chance to sing-taunt “Suck my cockiness, swallow my persuasion.” Two of Stargate and Esther Dean's three contributions -- the desperate, xx-sampling “Drunk on Love“ (“Nothing can sober me up”) and the prowling “Roc Me Out” -- pack more sleek menace than Rated R's “G4L” and Loud’s “S&M.” The album’s best track, however, is the wholly sweet and flirtatious “Watch n’ Learn,” featuring a dizzying Hit-Boy beat -- rat-a-tat snares, swirling/swelling synthesizers, irresistible plucked melodies -- that is even more unique in the context of 2011 pop radio than his work on Kanye West and Jay-Z's “Ni**as in Paris.” Behind Good Girl Gone Bad and Rated R, this is Rihanna's third best album to date. Minus the fluff, it's close to the latter's equal.

Based on Critics - 31/50
Based on Public - 50/50
Based on Hype - 50/50
Based on Pop Flares 36/50
Overall:

And congratulations for Rihanna for Loud being nominated as ALBUM OF THE YEAR!!!

Sampler: Rihanna - Talk That Talk

Album Review: Rihanna - Talk That Talk + You Da One

Rihanna | rihanna
#YouDaOne in your ears on Friday & on @itunesmusic on Sunday @ midnight! #WeBadUMad #TTTNov21

While waiting for the song and album to come out, here's a little review of the album...

'Talk That Talk' is the dirtiest pop album ever!

Actually, scratch that. Rihanna‘s new record, Talk That Talk, is the dirtiest “pop” record we have ever heard.
We listened to the entirety of the 11-song album, which will hit stores on Monday, November 21, earlier this
afternoon here at our Times Square headquarters and can confirm that everyone in attendance left the room with
flushed cheeks after experiencing extensive periods of blushing.
Now, this is not to say that Rihanna has gone out and recorded the female As Nasty As They Wanna Be; it’s not
simply a sexually-explicit affair (although, at one point during The-Dream produced track “Birthday Cake,” she
does proclaim “I wanna f*** you right now”). Rather, Talk That Talk continues the conversation that Rihanna began
with her single “S&M” (off Loud) and, if you’ll pardon the Spinal Tap reference, turns it up to 11. Rihanna and her
chief partner-in-crime, songwriter Esther Dean (who either wrote or co-wrote at least five songs on the LP), have
put together a record that not only oozes sex, but also revolves almost exclusively around it.
Take the album’s fifth track, “Cockiness,” for example. The Bangladesh-produced banger, which sounds like
a vintage-era Neptunes jam, begins with Rihanna telling her lover that “I want you to be my sex slave” and
contains the refrain “I love it when you eat it.” It doesn’t stop there; in perhaps the album’s most memorable
line, Rihanna demands her subject to “Suck my cockiness / Lick my persuasion.” This line, which got all of the
attendees in the room we were in to nervously chuckle, is the kind of line that would’ve got Rihanna called in
front of Congress if Tipper Gore were still running the PMRC, and the kind of song that would make even Prince‘s
famed protagonist “Darling Nikki” squeal.
It’s not just that track, either. On the Stargate-produced “Roc Me Out,” RiRi complains that “You’re taking too
long to get my head on the ground / And my feet in the clouds,” before cooing, “I’ve been a bad girl, daddy.”
And during “Watch And Learn,” produced by up-and-comer Hit-Boy, she goes to great lengths to detail how she
wants it on the bed, the floor, and the couch, before turning the tables and not-so-subtly instructing that “It’s
your turn now / Watch and learn now / Watch and learn how.” Trust us, the things she’s teaching in this song
certainly aren’t taught in schools (at least not without a permission slip signed by your parents).
All that being said, this album sounds positively MAMMOTH and will no doubt continue Rihanna’s dominance on
the pop charts for at least the next year and change. “Where Have You Been,” which was written by Top 40
formula crackers Dr. Luke and Esther Dean and produced by the hit maker du jour Calvin Harris, will almost
certainly be Rihanna’s biggest club smash since “Don’t Stop The Music.” The chorus features a sweeping,
trance-ish transition that will bowl over dancefloor denizens in clubs all over the world, and the bass in the
song is so monstrous (in a good way!) that it will make you want to trade in your factory-installed car speakers
for a top-of-the-line sound system. And we’ve gotten six paragraphs deep into this preview without even
mentioning Jay-Z’s guest vocals on the album’s fourth song and title track, “Talk That Talk,” which isn’t quite
on the level of “Umbrella,” but is a lock for the Billboard Top Ten whenever Def Jam decides to release it as a
single.
And “Drunk On Love”? Oh boy, this one is going to please Williamsburg hipsters to their core. It’s built on a
foundation of The XX‘s “Intro,” which gives it instant indie cred, but Stargate smartly takes Jamie XX‘s melody
line and transforms the beat into something so massive that your iPod earbuds are almost guaranteed to
explode.
While Rihanna’s Talk That Talk isn’t a record that you’re going to want to listen to with the kiddies in the room
(at least not sans EARMUFFS!), it’s far and away the most cohesive album that she’s recorded to date. It’s not
a concept record, per se, but the thematic consistency of this album’s lyrical content—shout out to Esther Dean,
a true freak if we’ve ever heard one!— and the epic soundscapes that Stargate, Calvin Harris and crew have
created make this, from start to finish, the most aurally satisfying record of the six full-length albums she has
released. It’s got at least five or six singles that have a shot at making a huge impact on the charts
(“We Found Love” has already hit #1), and when it’s all said and done, should put Rihanna neck-and-neck in the
running with Beyoncé for the most successful female solo artist of her era (not to mention, earning her a plaque
next to Madonna in the Hall of Fame for All-Time Most Sexually Provocative Female Solo artists).

Artist of The Month: Rihanna

This month AOTM is Rihanna. Following the release and success of Rihanna's previous studio album, Loud (2010), the singer revealed via Twitter that the album would be re-issued with new songs and released in Fall 2011, writing that "[t]he [Loud era] continues with more new music to add to [your] collection". In September 2011, Rihanna took to Twitter to confirm that plans for a re-issue ofLoud had been scrapped, with the singer tweeting "I [thought about] a RihRelease, but LOUD is its own body of work! Plus [you] guys work so [fucking] hard that [you] deserve to act brand new". In an interview with Mixtape Daily, producer Verse Simmonds, half of the duo The Jugganauts, who wrote and produced the reggae-infused song "Man Down" from Loud, revealed that the singer was nearing completion of her sixth studio album in August 2011. The duo also said that they had penned two tracks for possible inclusion on the album, saying "From what I understand, she is closing the album up now, and we did two records for her that she really, really loved and I'm really excited about them as well" and also expressed interest in writing a third song. On September 15, 2011, Rihanna confirmed via her official Twitter account that recording sessions for the album were indeed underway, tweeting "I can't wait to start filling u guys in on some details!" The tweet was soon followed up by another, where Rihanna tweeted "*Zips lips*," implying that she would no longer talk about the project's development Although the tweet suggested that the singer would not give any more details about the album, a fan tweeted to Rihanna asking when the album would be released, to which she replied, "THIS FALL!!!!! [sic]."

As part of the promotion for the album, Rihanna created a Facebook campaign page entitled "Rihanna: UNLOCKED" [sic], whereby her fans on Facebook are given missions to complete, in the form of games, in order to "unlock" new information about the album. On October 4, 2011, fans unlocked "Mission:5", which meant that fans had unlocked another piece of information from the album, with number five revealing the title of the album. The title, Talk That Talk, was announced via her official Facebook page. On October 10, 2011, after the Loud Tour concert in Glasgow, Scotland, Rihanna gave a copy of the album's artwork to a fan. The singer later tweeted to explain that the fan she gave the copy to was the only person outside of the singer's management to have seen the artwork up until that point, writing "One very lucky fan outside my concert just got the 1st album cover! She's the 1st to see it! Only 1 person in the world has it". The following day, fans unlocked "Mission:6" via the singer's official Facebook page, which resulted in Rihanna officially unveiling two artwork covers for the standard and deluxe editions of the album. The standard edition artwork features Rihanna "[licking] her coral red hued lips, posing in a camouflage sleeveless shirt with the album title tatted on her right arm". Upon on unveiling of the standard edition's artwork, both James Dinh of MTV and a reviewer for NME commented that Rihanna looks "seductive" in the image. Gordon Smart of The Sun humorously criticized the standard edition artwork by saying that it looks as though the singer is trying to cover up a cold sore with her tongue, writing "It's easy to pick them up at this time of year – especially as she's constantly naked or attached to her new boyfriend Dudley O'Shaughnessy by the lips." Smart continued, writing "Let's hope they had some decent soap on set to remove the album title Talk That Talk from her wrist as well". The deluxe edition artwork shows the singer "[blowing] out a puff of smoke" and is shot in black and white.[ Rap-Up commented that the deluxe edition artwork features Rihanna billowing smoke out of her mouth whilst staring into the camera with "piercing eyes". Amanda Hensel of Popcrush noted that Rihanna is French inhaling the cigarette smoke, whereby someone takes a deep drag, then while the mouth is open and the jaw is slowly closed to force the smoke out, then inhales through the nose, thus inhaling the smoke drifting from the mouth. Hensel also commented that the singer looks "fierce" in both the standard and deluxe edition covers.
