Flares: Chris Brown - Fortune

F.A.M.E. was Chris Brown's first album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200. Five of its singles went Top Five R&B/Hip-Hop, and it took the Grammy for Best R&B Album. The singer clearly feels more emboldened than ever, as he declares in Fortune's second song, the slow motion boom and wobble that is "Bassline": "I'm winnin', you heard about my image, but I could give a flyin' motherfuck who's offended." Save for a handful of quasi-sensitive ballads that come across as insincere, Fortune is an album of unapologetic swashbuckling. There are few dimensions. In "Bassline," Brown demands "Get butt naked to my bassline." The hook to "Sweet Love" begins with "Baby, let's get naked." That song is followed by "Strip," as in "Girl, I just wanna see you strip." Those three lines are among Fortune's cleanest. Even the atmospheric, impeccably-produced ballad "2012" -- involving some kind of Mayan apocalypse scenario where Brown and his lover are called upon to reverse the planet's fate -- gets graphic. Each line, from "Can you feel my submarine?" to "Girl, I like the way it opens up when you throw it back," has something shameless about it, while "I got that pillow for your knees right here" is the closest Brown gets to selflessness. All the way at the other end of the spectrum, "Girl, you better not change your mind" -- a prelude to the one-night stand in "Biggest Fan" -- is this album's "Don't you be on that bullshit," though it is beyond insolent. None of the dance tracks, including the graceless "Turn Up the Music" (featuring some strange likeness to Baltimora's "Tarzan Boy") and the shrill "Don't Wake Me Up," rivals Brown's past highlights. From a creative standpoint, this is more a leap than a step backward. Some of the productions, courtesy of the Runners, Adonis, and Kevin McCall, save it from being a disaster.

Flares of 2011: Male of The Year

 5. Chris Brown

After having a few tough years, Chris Brown finally made a comeback album. The album is his first no. 1 album selling 270,000 copies in the first week and is already certified gold for selling more than 500,000 copies. F.A.M.E. is also nominated for three Grammys this year.

 4. Pitbull

A few hits of his own (Hey Baby, Give Me Everything) and few featuring hits (On The Floor, I Like How It Feels), Pitbull is dominating the male music industry. But can he stay on top this year?

3. Justin Bieber

It's been a little over 2 years since we got to know this boy when he release his first single, One Time. Two studio albums later and another one on the way in 2012, Justin Bieber is not slowing down. With his voice changing can he still be the 'teen heartthrob' of 2012.

2. Lil Wayne

Tha Carter IV sold an impressive 964,000 copies in the first week and was already certified two times platinum thanks to the help of the single, How To Love which enjoy mainstream success. Will this actually be his last album? All we can do is wait.

1. Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars is the only artist in this list that didn't release an album this year. Yet he is our no. 1 Male of the Year. Well thanks to his grammy-nominated album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans that spawned several hits and his latest hit, It Will Rain, he didn't need so. Will he continue his success this year or will have a sophomore slump. I think he will do just fine.

Flares: Chris Brown - F.A.M.E.

Chris Brown's career was trending sharply downward. The singer’s self-titled debut went double platinum. Exclusive went single platinum. 2009’s Graffiti fell well short of gold-sales status, though it was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Contemporary R&B Album: far and away the worst disc to receive the honor. Rather than vanish and position himself for a spectacle-like comeback, Brown wisely continued to release new music through 2010. The offhandedly belligerent “Deuces” hit that summer and topped the R&B/Hip-Hop chart, while Brown also appeared on numerous singles headlined by others, including Twista’s Top Ten “Make a Movie.” By the time F.A.M.E. was released in March 2011, the album’s variety of styles was already known. A total of five songs, including the slinking pop-R&B of “Deuces,” had hit various singles charts. The bleepy rap track “Look at Me Now,” where Brown displays some competence as an MC but is devoured by Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes' rapid-fire verses, was one of them. The celebratory “Yeah 3x” and the anthemic “Beautiful People,” a pair of club singles, nodded to Eurodance. And then there was the smoothly percussive “No BS,” a slow jam with chivalrous sweet nothings like “I’m-a leave it in when we do it” and “Don’t you be on that bullshit.” Despite the success of some of these pre-album singles, they don’t represent the best of F.A.M.E. On the earnest ballad “Up to You,” the Michael Jackson/SWV-sampling “She Ain’t You,” and the remorseful “All Back” (written and produced by Timothy Bloom, one to watch), Brown plays to his strength as a boyish, romantic pop-R&B singer, while “Say It with Me” shows that he can handle harder grooves that are more R&B than pop. This all makes F.A.M.E. the equal of Forever, if not slightly better, and it hints that Brown’s best is yet to come.
